It's funny; in the 80s, when I was a teen, the "Star Trek" phenomenon was just re-runs of The Original Series. There were fans, of course, but nothing existed like today's "Star Trek Universe", with around half a dozen shows.
I think I preferred the fans then. (Many of whom, of course, are still fans.) More core nerdiness, I guess.

Forget about “going viral” anymore; it used to happen in an organic storm of interest, now the power to go viral is gate-kept very strongly, and is thus “viral” things are entirely manufactured.

Did you know “The Internet” used to be full of fairly smart people? It took intelligence to get online.
Then around 2000 the internet started to become more common. Now, with mobile use, literally everyone with a phone has equal access.
It’s hard to describe how raw it used to be, too. It wasn’t such a cultivated experience.
I wonder how the zeitgeist of “The Internet” will change in the future?

A lot of people “offload” their thinking. They “trust experts.” Their opinions are derived from their friend group. Etc. They don't do the mental work themselves, they trust some other entity to do it.
These kind of minds are ripe for dependency on artificial intelligence. As time progresses, it will be fascinating to see who cannot think when the internet goes out, much as people and businesses can't do anything in a power outage.

My SD card in my Samsung phone failed, and I had to replace it, just a week ago. The pokey tool that ejects the SD/SIM card tray, smaller than a paper clip, was still in the box I had saved…
But an empty box? Get rid of it.
