When I lived in New York, I knew talented students who had graduated from Parsons School of Design. Some of them were Jewish. That was years before October 7.

Sophie Shabot was a Jewish student there on the day of the massacre. Her classmates knew she was Jewish and Israeli. By October 8 she was a target.

Her desk was vandalized. She was chased, pushed, shoved, spat on, and blocked from buildings. When she begged to be let into the sewing studio, they taunted her: “Do the children in Gaza have sewing studios?” She was called a “Zio bitch,” a “genocidal maniac,” a “baby killer,” then followed down the street. She was trapped at a Jewish event while protesters rattled the door and demanded the students hand over the speaker — the “terrorist.”

She asked repeatedly for the school to intervene and help. They didn’t even call the police.

Two days ago, on the third anniversary of October 7, she sued. The Department of Education has accused The New School, Parsons’ parent, of violating Title VI.
The school I once knew is gone, lost in a frenzy of post-October 7 Jew-hatred.

I’ve been suspended at work since July following an anonymous grievance (not anonymous as the company accidentally revealed who it was) that said: “Sophie’s views are much more extreme than the perspectives of someone I’d feel comfortable working with.”
My employer refused to obtain witness accounts I believe are essential to my defence and refused permission for me to contact colleagues to obtain them. I’m pursuing legal action.
I also reported that my manager said he didn’t want to hire white people because they were “lazy”. Both white managers at our workplace were suspended at the same time (me being one of them) I’m deeply concerned about how this has been handled.
With finding work already so difficult for young people, this has been incredibly hard. I don’t believe I should be facing this. If anyone has advice, or a shoulder to cry on, I’d really appreciate it.
