Congrats to LMRCSC Ph.D. Fellow Michelle Fernandez, who was recently awarded the Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute (GCFI) 2026 Ronald L. Schmied Scholarship to travel to the GCFI Conference in November in Curaçao. Michelle studies at the @univmiami Rosenstiel School.

LMRCSC fellows are beginning fall semester equipped with new knowledge from their summer internships. Lady Volmar, a master's fellow at @savannahstate spent her summer at the Hollings Marine Lab in S.C. with NOAA Scientist Dr. Paul Pennington, studying microplastics in oysters.

NOAA LMRCSC and #UMES Alum Myah Bowie spent the summer with The Diversity Project, a @UCLA program that teaches undergrads to use SCUBA as a research tool. She presented her research at a symposium, Aug. 14, to mentors, parents, and other LMRCSC/Diversity Project alums. @UMESNews

The Research Experience for Undergraduates program at University of Maryland Eastern Shore wrapped August 6, when interns presented their findings at the 2026 Summer Research Symposium. Congrats on all your hard work!

Summer is the season for field research, and many LMRCSC fellows are interning at NOAA facilities! @OregonState Ph.D. student Lily Olmo is working at the NOAA Pacific Islands Regional Office to study juvenile fish recruitment in a brackish Hawaiian loko iʻa (fishpond).
