For those who became homeless and choose homelessness as a lazy excuse to panhandle for drugs, my sympathies aren’t nearly as invested.

Living downtown put me in a position to interview, photograph, and hang out with the overwhelming amount of homeless folks in abq. It didn’t take until I became homeless myself to actually feel that struggle—I can’t imagine how much worse it could be if my mental wasn’t “normal”.

Then they can’t get a home because they can’t get a job. Some are robbed of their identification and documentation needed to obtain the identity requirements necessary for employment and housing. So they get stuck and spit on by society, misunderstood and mistreated.

What many people don’t understand about homeless people is that a large number of them suffer from psychological disorders that are non-drug related. Whether genetically or trauma induced, those with schizophrenia, severe paranoia, and clinical anxiety disorders can’t hold a job.
