what does automated truly mean? people who make these claims rarely define the term well

does automated stop and end at the code? does it include requirements gathering? user acceptance testing? maintenance? product decisions? general taste and product ownership?

does it understand separating "the customer asked for x but they really need y?" if you ask AI to build x, it will simply build it without considering y

does it include coordinating across different teams with different services and products, of which all are constantly in flux?

people who claim software engineering is now "automated" because we can generate code often reveal how little knowledge they have of what software engineers actually do

in this respect, software engineering is and has always been very different than all other forms of engineering. if you're asked to build a rocket engine, you build a rocket engine and know its purpose. it's a very difficult thing to do, but the requirements aren't vague and always shifting. the software equivalent is "thanks for that rocket engine but can you also turn it into a refrigerator? by next week if possible thanks"

a rocket engine is a rocket engine. a bridge is a bridge. software is the only engineering discipline where the thing being made can and will eventually look very different than what its original purpose was, and that's something AI will always struggle to properly understand as well as a human with domain expertise
