Something I learned from 20yrs covering government:
One person’s “waste” is:
- another person’s lifeline;
- another person’s hometown infrastructure;
- another person’s pathway to college;
- another person’s road to a better life;
- another person’s future medical breakthrough.
@DanTheGOAT90@StadiumShadow There is most definitely that argument to be made, especially from St Petersburg.
Tampa had a free product, and they are essentially negotiating against themselves to start paying (a ton) for it.
NYC’s next head of Dept of Consumer & Worker Protection will be @saalevine.
As you can tell from my story with him 2yrs ago, he is unapologetically anti-junk fee and pro-consumer rights.
5/x Junk Fee strategy 1: ENFORCEMENT
@FTC & other fed agencies are issuing huge fines to worst junk fee offenders, one industry at a time.
"We hope it sends a message to other companies in the industry that these types of practices are not going to be tolerated."

Our team brings dozens of agencies, partners, and stakeholders together every day to improve New Yorkers' lives and outcomes.
✨Happy Holidays, NYC✨
7) The end result? @NYCMayor just announced a massive investment & expansion in our program.
Exciting for me, but life-changing for the 300 New Yorkers who’ll benefit from the program in FY26.
Proud of NYC🗽, my @CrimJusticeNYC team, and of storytelling that makes a difference!
A short 🧵 about how great storytelling is a game-changer, regardless of your industry.
And it starts with a program I learned about my first day on the job at @CrimJusticeNYC six months ago…
6) 🤝 Following the graduation, we facilitated a series of conversations between the mayor’s team and our program partners.
We highlighted the success… 🏆
We highlighted the ROI… 📈
We highlighted the stories. 🫶🏼
City hall was sold.✅
Gerrymandering is a uniquely American problem that ends up disenfranchising tens of millions of American voters.
NBCLX Political Editor @NoahPransky used his favorite candy to explain what it is and how it may be solved.

☎️Most of us learned in grade school how the game of “telephone” is arguably the single worst way to transmit information.☎️
Yet more Americans now trust this method of news delivery than any other source.
2024 was the year I realized good information was dead.🧵
2) In short, we have outsourced a large percentage of our critical thinking to algorithms.
Every one of us.
We are letting algorithms – that are not incentivized to inform, but to maximize profits through agitation – to be our gatekeepers for which news & facts we see.
