Democracy and the Working Class
This new book by Nicholas Carnes and @NoamLupu addresses the question, Why do so few working-class people go on to hold elected office? It considers democracies across the globe.
This is the sort of analysis I have not seen in quite a while and that helps us understand why democracies yield the outcomes they do.

Keeping Workers Off the Ballot examines why working-class people make up much of the labor force, yet remain dramatically underrepresented in democracies around the world.

There's an old saying in politics: If you're not at the table, you're on the menu. This book concludes with some ideas for how to build political institutions that give everyone a seat at the table.

It's finally publication day for this decade-in-the-making book.
Nick Carnes and I explain why working-class jobs make up 70% of the average democracy's labor force, but only 2% of the average democracy's national lawmakers had working-class jobs when they got into politics.
Party leaders and other gatekeepers pass over workers in favor of candidates who will have an easier time. There are rare historical exceptions, but they never last. Working-class representation in electoral democracies is always pulled down towards zero--by elections themselves.

Website: https://t.co/0cW9FhjtZV
Martín's research focuses on:
- How citizens interpret and enforce the boundaries of democracy in Latin America
- Why democratic violations become politically consequential when citizens expect others to punish them too, tested in preregistered experiments with over 6,000 respondents across Mexico and Argentina
- Whether institutional arbiters, such as courts and electoral authorities, shape how citizens respond to violations
- How democratic institutions shape citizens on the ground, in ongoing work on Mexico's poll workers, using a natural experiment in how they are appointed, and on participatory budgeting in Mexico City
