The cameraman, until the very last moments of his life, answered the bullets with curses. The very person whom the cyber operatives of the Islamic Republic and opponents of the Pahlavis dismiss as a “foul-mouthed thug” continued to defy the gunfire with his words.

The groundbreaking Iranian mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani. She was the first woman to win the Fields Medal in 2014, which is the highest honor in mathematics....

Maryam Mirzakhani was born in Tehran, Iran, on May 3, 1977. She showed an early interest in mathematics and attended the Farzanegan School, part of Iran’s National Organization for Development of Exceptional Talents. Her abilities gained international recognition when she won gold medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad in 1994 and 1995, achieving a perfect score in the latter year.

She studied mathematics at Sharif University of Technology in Tehran before moving to the United States for graduate work at Harvard University. Under the supervision of Curtis McMullen, she completed her Ph.D. in 2004. Her dissertation provided deep insights into the geometry and dynamics of hyperbolic surfaces, laying the foundation for much of her later work.

Her research focused on the geometry and topology of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces. She developed new methods to study the dynamics of billiards on polygonal surfaces and made groundbreaking contributions to Teichmüller theory, which explores how geometric structures on surfaces change over time. Her work combined ideas from complex geometry, topology, and dynamical systems in novel ways.

In 2008, she became a professor at Stanford University. In 2014, she was awarded the Fields Medal, the most prestigious prize in mathematics, becoming the first woman and the first Iranian to receive the honor. The citation recognized her "outstanding contributions to the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces."

She was known not only for her technical brilliance but also for her approach to problem-solving, often describing mathematical exploration as similar to writing a novel. She preferred working through problems visually, covering large sheets of paper with drawings and diagrams.

She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013. Despite her illness, she continued her research and mentorship of students. She died on July 14, 2017, in Palo Alto, California, at the age of 40. Her legacy continues to inspire mathematicians, particularly women in STEM fields. In her honor, Iran declared May 12, her birthday according to the Persian calendar, as National Women in Mathematics Day.
