Mental Health in Nigeria:
Pre-Democracy โ Democracy โ Future Hope ๐ณ๐ฌ๐ง
1/10
Before democracy (1960โ1999), Nigeria's mental health law was the Lunacy Act of 1958, focused on CONFINEMENT, not treatment.
People with mental illness faced stigma, abuse, and wrongful confinement.
9/10
Mental health conversations are growing, especially among Nigerian youth on social media.
We have the law. Now we need funding + community care + stigma reduction. Your mental health matters.
If you havanxiety, oria, anxiety, depression, seek help. It's okay not to be okay.
8/10
On Democracy Day 2025, health practitioners urged:
Healthcare must be prioritized not only as a right but also as a critical driver of national development and stability."
Restructure the economy. Increase funding. Ensure affordable access for all.
7/10
Democracy CAN foster healthier environments but only if:
โจ Elections are free and fair.
โจ The economy stabilizes.
โจ The Mental Health Act is IMPLEMENTED, not just signed.
โจ Funding increases meaningfully.
โจ Youth engage in the democratic process.
5/10
But reality today:
๐ด 40โ50M Nigerians affected (20% of population).
๐ด 75โ90% receive NO professional treatment.
๐ด Only 300 psychiatrists for 220M+ people.
๐ด Only 9 federal + 5 state psychiatric hospitals.
๐ด Mental health budget: 3.12% of health spending and declining.
4/10
What the Act establishes:
โ Zero-tolerance for stigma, marginalization & abuse.
โ Equal rights to treatment as physical illness.
โ Protection of persons with mental disorders.
โ National suicide prevention strategy. (suicide decriminalized)
3/10
HISTORIC MILESTONE (Jan 5, 2023):
President Tinubu signed the Mental Health Act 2021 into law, replacing the 65-year-old Lunacy Act.
Nigeria's first progressive mental health legislation in 61 years of independence.
2/10
Mental illness was seen as a spiritual curse, weakness, or possession. ๐ข
Only a few psychiatric hospitals existed. 90%+ of the health budget went to hospitals.
Community care = nonexistent. Millions suffered silently
Good evening & welcome ๐ค

Through her work in public health advocacy and community engagement, she continues to champion conversations around womenโs health, with a strong focus on awareness, education, and emotional well-being.
In this session, she will be speaking on PCOS and its mental impact.
May this month bring growth, healing, open doors, and meaningful progress.
Together, let us create a community where people feel seen, heard, valued, and supported.
Let us make things happen and support each other along the way ๐ค.
