A 24 hours of Le Mans Story

On the Rocks Racing has survived The “Cursed Server” of Split 1 of the 24 hour of Le Mans in Le Mans Ultimate! Congrats to @noce_rafael, Pablo and yes, my 11 year old sim racing son, Cameron, for one heckuva exciting day. We lost Cameron and Pablo halfway through when they could not rejoin the server from their machines.

So it was just me and Raf, promising each other to stick it out, and then half way through a stint, Raf got disconnected, and the car warped back into the garage. He could not rejoin, so I had to Enter the Car and take over and we all were sitting there going “Now what!” There were over 11 hours left..And I was facing having to run the entire remaining Le Mans SOLO. I spent the next few hours driving stint after stint by myself while we prayed the server would let us in, and I was thinking “I am too old for this!”

(The Le Mans Ultimate dev team tried everything to fix their Docker container hosting the server in flight, but they couldn’t and ultimately apologized but short of kicking us all out and resetting there was nothing they could do).

Then, I had an idea. Cameron couldn’t rejoin on his machine, but he also uses a Quest 3 headset, Logitech Load Force pedals and his wheel shouldn’t be too different than my Simagic. Why not have him ready with a seat bolster, I get out and he hops in on pit stops, I remove my Quest 3 prescription lens inserts, and he races my car ever few stints so I can get a break! And he did AMAZING after initially feeling ‘weird’. I wish someone had gotten footage of our ‘real life’ 40 second “pit stop” !! It was wild!

Then, by some miracle, after hours of clicking “Join” to no avail, Pablo got back on! Poor Rafael tried for the entire remainder of the event but could not. So he stayed on the Discord, encouraging us, helping with strategy ideas, etc.

So Pablo and Cameron and I got through the race together, watching driver after driver give up in despair and pit their cars to get some sleep. We drove on. Moving up the field.

Finally near the end drivers got back in their cars and resumed doing some laps to JUST CROSS THE FINISH LINE!

We let my son take the final few laps at 5:30 AM and Pablo shared his discord stream so Raf could at least enjoy seeing us take the checkered flag!

I don’t know why Le Mans Ultimate thought we should be in the top split against alien level drivers. We truly did not belong there on lap times. But we were there nonetheless. The guys NEVER gave up. Never quit. They would be there for me if I had to solo it. I look at it as: It is an endurance race to see who can last. We lasted. We finished in 8th position and I’m very proud of that!

It was awesome to see the in-game chat in the last half hour of everyone encouraging each other not to give up. Instead of trying to ‘beat’ each other…it was “come on, you can do this! 30 more minutes! Don’t give up!”. AWESOME community.

Also, a hat tip to my Quest 3! So many people crap on VR for endurance events, but that Quest 3 ran non-stop for the full 24 hours. No disconnecting, no hiccups or stutters, but a ethernet-wired @quest and Virtual Desktop ran like a champ!

(I still can’t believe my 11 year old son can do sub 3:33 times in the Valkyrie at Le Mans under pressure in the middle of the night. What a kid!)
