@glosseantics yeah, they've been talking about not actually replacing the awacs when they age out. generally seems like ~new untested ideas~ that are not gonna work well tho

@n_hold (I have for a long time hidden behind "its just a job; I am just doing a job in capitalism; it's not more good or bad than that") but now under threat am realizing that I should come to terms w/ what I actually want to offer to students. surely not grades, but...?)
@n_hold not in a critical way or whatever, but because I'm also trying to figure this out myself. I was listening to some ppl talking about the exploratory value of being pushed on stuff & thinking "IDK i have experienced ~some of that from youtube videos too so... do we need college?"
I don't think that this is an insurmountable obstacle, though, and I do think that (in China where I am) there is still a broad societal desire for ways to Stay Ahead of the Permanent Underclass & universities, including humanities depts, will continue to play an important role
everybody is in the doldrums about academia & I can understand why, but I also had meetings with most of my students in the past 2 weeks and honestly it was pretty nice - the students are getting stuff, they care, they will be OK.
(Like: They are Chinese speakers and I don't get papers w/ glaring fucked up translation/grammar errors anymore. Wild!). But also, we do still need to figure out how to make sure they are reading, engaging, and learning. Output they produce is no longer a coherent symbol of this.
as things in the global north go increasingly K-shaped I'm developing an odd sort of sympathy for boomers who experienced the 30 glorious years. like oh you just had no idea the world could be like this. they're like purebred cats dumped in the woods.
