A council banned its own county's meat and dairy to cut food miles, then served flown-in pomegranate.

Oxfordshire County Council voted it through in 2021, on a motion from Green councillor Ian Middleton, for the health of our planet and our people. All catered council events, entirely plant-based. No beef from the county's fields. No milk from the county's cows. Nothing that had ever met a farmer.

The photos of the inaugural vegan lunch, posted by the man who proposed it, showed melon, mango, kiwi and pomegranate.

Pomegranate. In Oxfordshire. In a county so drenched in dairy you could raise a heifer in the car park, the planet was saved with a fruit that has never once ripened within nine hundred miles of Banbury.

The council later admitted it also serves imported oranges and bananas, since there have been occasions, particularly in the winter months, when food has been sourced from further afield.

Further afield. In winter. There is a cow eight miles away, standing in the December drizzle, producing milk, and the answer arrived by aeroplane.

Then the Countryside Alliance checked, and found the vegan lunches cost the taxpayer more than the meals they replaced, and that the council could not say where any of the food came from. Not wouldn't. Couldn't. The authority lecturing a county of farmers about supply chains had lost track of its own.

The mango came four thousand miles to make a point about distance.

It takes a thousand years to build three centimetres of topsoil. We lose a football pitch of it every five seconds.

A third of the world's farmable soil is already dead. The UN warned that if the stripping goes on, we have sixty harvests left.

Iowa, the richest ground in America, has lost close to half its topsoil since 1850. Ploughed loose and sent down the Mississippi.

Warming gets the summits and the placards. The soil that grows ninety-five percent of your food is washing away right now, and that is the one that starves you.

Here is the part that stays off the stage.

The deepest, blackest, most fertile ground on earth, the American prairie, the Russian steppe, the Ukrainian black earth that feeds the world, was built by one thing.

Vast herds of grazing ruminants. Trampling, dunging, moving on. Tens of millions of bison, roots fifteen feet deep, packing carbon into the ground for ten thousand years.

The plough switched that off. The cow, moved like the wild herd, switches it back on. Graze it right and the carbon sinks, the soil thickens, the rain soaks in instead of tearing the field away.

The best machine ever built for saving the soil is the animal they want off your plate.

A tractor cannot build soil. Fertiliser cannot build soil. Only the herd ever has.

But healing the world's dirt means more cattle on grass, not fewer.

So you will hear about the cow's burp right up until the last of the topsoil reaches the sea.

The Polish government is literally telling its citizens: before you leave Britain, make sure you squeeze one last payout from the UK welfare system.

On its official Powroty site for returnees, Warsaw advises that “when leaving the UK, it is worth considering whether you are eligible for Jobseeker’s Allowance” – because post���Brexit rules let EU citizens with settled status export some benefits for three months while they job hunt back home.

In plain English: if you’re heading back to Poland, check whether you can get hundreds of pounds from the British taxpayer to support your job search in Poland, even though you’re not looking for work here and will no longer live here.

Thousands of Poles have already left UK since Brexit to enjoy better growth and wages in their own country; our system still offers some of them a soft landing payment on the way out.

Britain isn’t just a place you can earn and send money home from; it’s now a place whose benefits can follow you home if you tick the right boxes.
