Business etiquette is far more than knowing the “right” thing to say or do. It is a strategic business tool.

For organisations operating across borders and businesses preparing to go global, how you communicate, build relationships, conduct meetings and navigate cultural differences can significantly influence trust, credibility and business opportunities.

In a global marketplace, your competence may open the door, but your etiquette can determine what happens after you enter. It determines if customers can trust you, if they feel comfortable around you, and if they feel respected by you.

As a global tech company, the team left knowing that while the world may be digital, business is still deeply human.

Two weeks ago, during my 4-day #leadership and #customercentricity programme for the management trainees of @marketsquarengr , this question popped up: “How do I remain kind and empathetic without becoming too soft as a leader?”
This is a question many emerging leaders struggle with and the answer is this:

Leadership requires both empathy and accountability. While empathy allows a leader to understand the person behind the performance. Accountability ensures that the person does not use circumstances as an excuse for poor performance.

Empathy does not mean endorsing complacency, and ccountability does not mean becoming tyrannical. They must not be seen as opposites but as attributes that complement each other.

For example:
A leader can say “I understand that you are facing challenges, and I am willing to support you. But we still need to deliver on this commitment.”
That is empathy with boundaries.

The bridge between both is execution discipline which every employee must imbibe.

Great leaders don't just care about how people feel, they also care about whether the team delivers. They must develop the maturity and skill to know when to listen, when to coach, when to challenge, and when to hold the line. This must be intentionally developed and continuously honed.

It was a period of learning, sharing and awakening, and participants left with confidence and enthusiasm for their new responsibility as the leaders of others.
