The people who make the biggest display of how tolerant they are are often the least tolerant in practice. They mistake holding the “right” opinions for becoming the right kind of person. In their minds they’re compassionate, but because they’ve never confronted their own anger, resentment, or pride, those qualities get projected onto everyone else. They become convinced that hatred exists everywhere….except within themselves.
Real compassion isn’t measured by the causes you publicly support. It’s measured by how you treat the people you encounter every day: your family, your neighbors, the cashier, the waiter, the stranger who disagrees with you. Anyone can perform virtue. Very few people are willing to do the difficult work of recognizing and transforming the darkness within themselves. That’s where genuine tolerance begins.
