Electric trains on the lower deck of the Bay Bridge in San Francisco / Oakland (1950)
The Key System operated electric trains over the lower deck of the Bay Bridge for almost 20 years from 1939 to 1958. After World War II, the rise of car ownership and freeway construction led to a decline in ridership.
In the 1950s, buses began to replace many of the streetcar & train lines and the company shifted entirely to bus operations under the name Key System Transit Lines.
The Key System itself was a privately owned mass transit system that operated from the early 1900s until the 1960s and primarily served the East Bay while also providing a direct link between Oakland and San Francisco.
It initially consisted of streetcars and interurban trains that connected residential areas in the East Bay to ferry terminals for crossings to San Francisco.
