I participate in HIV forums and listserves, and a couple months ago this article appeared and generated a lot of heated discussion.

The premise was triggering for many.

With HIV testing, ARVs, and PrEP we can stop transmission. So why bother looking for a cure?

I’ve said this before.

HIV is a chronic condition, like arthritis, diabetes, chronic heart disease, and hundreds of others. Many people take a daily pill or worse. With diabetes it means tesing glucose by using a needle several times a day. Managing diet from hour to hour, taking pills and self-injecting insulin.

People with high blood pressure don’t cry because there’s no cure. They take their medications and get on with their lives.

So why is HIV so psychologically devistating?

I think there’s a few reasons. Because many people find out when they’re young, it becomes their first experience with a chronic illness and mortality. It disrupts our dreams about our future.

Our feelings about PLWH before we tested positive may have been negative. We may have rejected PLWH or avoided them. Now, we turn that negativity inwards and reject ourselves.

There is so much stigma associated with HIV and the worst kind is self-stigma.

HIV is a chronic manageable condtion. We can have a long, healthy life. What we really need is a cure for HIV stigma, expecially self-stigma.

We need to love ourselves ❤️
