Canada and the US prepare to face each other in another Olympic gold medal game. In 2020, Jarome Iginla remembered Sidney Crosby’s golden goal at the 2010 Olympics: “Gold medal game, overtime, in Canada, against the States.
That’s it, right? That’s the moment every kid in our country dreams of.
I remember Scott Niedermayer saying, ‘Somebody’s going to be a hero tonight.’
Let’s do it....
One of the things I learned about Sid during that tournament is that he’s vocal. He’s always talking out there, trying to direct play and get the puck to go where he wants. It’s one of the things that make him a great player, absolutely. But one of the things I picked up on was that he has a few different … voices, let’s say. If there’s an outlet pass to relieve some pressure, he might say, ‘I’m with ya! I’m with ya!’ in a solid, stern tone.
And, as a player, you know that he’s open and ready to go. Pretty standard.
But he’s got this other voice, this other octave, that he goes to when he really wants the puck. It’s more of a yell. Guy just loves to score.
So, I think on our second shift in OT, he brought the puck in, tried to make a move and it ended up in the corner. I cycled in below him to help out and it ended up on my stick, and then I heard that voice.
‘Iggy! Iggy! Iggy!’
Loud. Clear.
It almost shocked me, a bit.
I gotta get this guy the puck.
I think Ryan did a good job of getting me up against the boards and I just did my best to move the puck to Sid. Then the next thing I heard was the crowd on the other side of the glass in front of me. I didn’t even see it go in. The place erupted and it’s all a bit of a blur after that.” https://t.co/DUMw7sL0Rk

“Representing Canada means everything to me. With not being able to play at the Olympics until this season, it’s been this part of me that’s been missing. Some of my favorite hockey memories ever are with a Canada jersey on. Or even just watching as a fan.”
It’s your moment, 97.
This could be Sidney Crosby’s last time winning, and it’s been hard thinking about this all day.
Should he play tomorrow? Probably not.
Will he play tomorrow? Probably yes.
At 38 years old he will probably not play in the 2030 games; Pittsburgh doesn’t look anywhere close to making a cup run, and he isn’t going to leave the Penguins to chase a cup.
He has also said he has no interest in coaching or management.
For those of us watching him since 2005, this could be the last time we get to see him win something.
Our childhood “Sid the Kid” may get his last chance tomorrow. And I’m devastated thinking about this.
Win this for Sidney Crosby, please. 🥇
Canada’s🇨🇦 Tom Wilson was asked about all the kids at school watching the quarterfinal game:
“It’s not that long ago that you were the kid in the classroom when they wheel those old big TVs in and they’d put the antennas up so you could get the signal and watch Team Canada play. I remember being there. Seeing your local rink with watch parties cheering you on. That's why we're here. We're here for our country. We're here to try and make them proud. It's not about us. I think if you ask any single guy in that room, it's way bigger than us. All I can do, all we can do at this point, is just leave it all out there for our country.”
