This Black History Month (and beyond) i’m proud to have written the foreword for this comic by the generational force that is Ta-Nehisi Coates, someone making black history now! Coates carries the torch held by great thinkers like Ida B Wells, Frederick Douglass, and James Baldwin. The beauty of the comic book is that it lowers our defenses and provides an avenue for engagement in a way where the audience is likely to hear and then act. It is truth presented in digestible portions. Coates doesn’t bludgeon those who are slow to understand or have yet to arrive at the conclusions he long ago reached; he provides an on ramp for discovery and personal evolution. Moreover, through comic books and other writings, he explains that all of us have the capacity to play the role of villain; we get to choose each and every day.
