"Minutes" with a special educator are not always minutes of intervention. Coteaching isn't intervention. General push in help isn't intervention. These are "luxury goods." Intervention is a basic necessity! #LeadInclusion#EduSky#UDL#EdLeaders#Teachers
Nothing stirred people who followed me or angered/stirred those who read my tweets more than my tweets about PA needing to be done with letters.
I am now getting the same reactions when I talk, tweet, or post about the ineffectiveness of silent reading as a practice for novice readers and how much instructional time it wastes.
Here is the thing. I used to abide by that practice too. I too used to think it was effective because despite what my eyes saw I followed so-called BL experts who misled me and misinformed me.
But then, I learned better and did better.
That is why I promote teacher knowledge along with evidence-based practices. Because without knowledge we become vulnerable and stagnate.
Children deserve better. They deserve teachers and education leaders who are nimble enough to grow with the evidence and are curious and willing enough to learn.
The "yes sayers" and the "go with the flow" might make some feel good and validated, but those are not movers and shakers and they are often OK with the "status quo" regardless of the consequences and effects.
Speaking up and being passionate can be interpreted as being contrary, but more often than not interpreting in this way would be wrong. Speaking up takes courage, determination, and the conviction of knowing your why.
One of the saddest things that can happen to any school system is when their passionate voices become silent.
Being an effective teacher is not a not a one and done type of thing…everyone in education, owes it to every child under the care to make sure that they know how to provide them with the foundational reading skills that would help them to become proficient readers.
It is our most sacred obligation to our kids, society and our country.
If you are an Ed leader it is your to ensure that you can equip the teachers under your care with the knowledge, training, tools and coaching they need in order to teach reading effectively. No other legacy will be as paramount as this.
It is the the duty of every teacher to be willing to grow and and learn what practices are effective for most and even abondon practices that poorly support students and leave them behind.
No one gets to sit this one out and good intentions will not cut it.
Congrats to @CaitlinClark22, the greatest scorer in the history of women’s college basketball! It's been fun watching you and the @IowaWBB team this season.
