The annual business meeting for the American Heart Association's Epidemiology Council (and our fancy lunch & panel) is about to start! Our Early Career committee chair, Dr. Madison LeCroy, is moderating.

One of American Heart Association's busiest years in recent memory for clinical updates and scientific statements. The session at AHA's Epi|Lifestyle began with Dr. Seth Martin and the 2024 Global Statistics update.

Kicking off Wednesday at the AHA Epi & Lifestyle conference with a great presentation by Dr. Cheryl Anderson about the journey to our current understanding of "Food as Medicine" and path to sustainable behavior change. @JAHA_AHA@American_Heart#EPILifestyle24#JAHAMeetingReport
Dr. @sandrogalea argues that we can re-imagine health prevention in 3 major ways:
1️⃣: Centering equity 🩺🏥
2️⃣: Better science to guide decision making 🔬📊
3️⃣: Self-awareness to more consequential scholarship 🔍
Call for papers! We are now accepting submissions for a new special collection on environmental epidemiology, including those that apply novel approaches or data to understanding the epi of environmental exposures. Read the full description here: https://t.co/xQGI4Tvy8E
This morning's Frederick Epstein Memorial lecture delivered some hard truths about how the public health and prevention med communities responded to the pandemic: widening health disparities for essential workers, minorities, and the chronically ill.

On how panelists work to adapt best practices to better integrate them in the communities they work with: "We need to think really broadly about what diversity means in deciding where to focus. That's something we as epidemiologists can do." - Dr. Ann Marie Navar

A panel about #AHA guidelines and statements may not sound like a rollercoaster ride, but these speakers brought the fireworks: implementation, Life's Essential 8, health equity, pre-pregnancy outcomes, and the latest big report on #CVH and #stroke statistics!

Higher cumulative CV health score is associated with better outcomes in midlife independent of its change or the midlife score -> the longer we commit to a healthier lifestyle, the lower the risk of CVD 🫀 #EPILifestyle23#JAHAMeetingReport@JAHA_AHA
Great way to wrap up the session on Health Disparities and SDOH at the Epi|Lifestyle conference - Dr Albert of AHA thanked everyone on the panel for highlighting the work we have left to do & demonstrating the benefits of including diverse perspectives.

NEW findings presented by Dr. Wayne Lawrence, from the MESA cohort: Discrimination over lifetime and EVERY day is a driver of CVD Mortality risk, overall and especially for Black men in the US. #EPILifestyle23#SDOH#jahameetingreport#ahajournals
Dr. Ifedi Anikpo just provided some remarkably clear results showing that length of time in the US is a clear (...negative) social determinant of cardiovascular health for Black immigrants. Their risk approaches the highest risk group.. US-born Black people.

Social vulnerability drives risk of hypertension and CVD, even in the poorest country in the western hemisphere. Nicholas Roberts MPH, a student from Weill Cornell Med, did a great job describing early findings from the new Haiti CVD Cohort!
