I’ve tried creating servers with my friends, and they never last as long as a group chat does.
I think it has to do with the feeling that servers are more geared toward community interaction, while DMs and group chats are more personal. I don’t check my pings in servers as often because they’re usually update pings or announcements that I don’t normally have to respond to. But for my DMs and group chats, I feel more that the conversation is directly involving me, so it feels more important to check and respond.
Another benefit of group chats is that we can call everyone in the group at once, which doesn’t feel quite the same as pinging everyone for a call in a server. Server notifications also don’t appear at the top of Discord in the same way that a DM or group chat notification does, so it’s much easier to miss them. Servers also require you to set them up, while groupchat can instantly be created by just selecting the users you wish to have in it.
For me there’s just a clear distinction between the two sides of Discord. The servers I’m in are mostly for announcements, updates, and informational pings about games and other things I’m interested in. While my DMs and group chats are where I actually go to talk with my friends.
