@jerichobrown my biggest poetry question recently comes from this. after i get a poetic urge and write down a list of images and observations, how to move forward? i'm told to focus on sound and language instead of forcing a theme -- is that all?

by "lets the poem lead her" do you mean something like Clifton would have thought about water & the almost body & drowning, and this led her thru association to the next stanzas?
