I made the most of the bank holiday and visited All Saints Church at Down Ampney, which has a memorial stained glass window to the men and women of the Royal Air Force, the 1st and 6th Airborne Divisions and Air Despatch Groups R.A.S.C. who took part in operations from Down Ampney, including Normandy on D-Day and Operation Market Garden.

In the early hours of D-Day, Pte John Steele of the 82nd Airborne became caught on the steeple of the Church at Sainte-Mere-Eglise, where he hung while the battle raged below.
His effigy still hangs from the tower as a tribute to all airborne soldiers who took part in the Normandy landings
