Something about the GFS refusing to let go of its idea and theory is quite interesting. The Euro is stuck on it's own and different idea. We have two leading models here that isn't budging either way and they both have REALLY DIFFERENT takes on this storm. This is why you're seeing forecast maps that are very different. The truth? We need to wait for short range models to really see this storm, which unfortunately won't be until 6am tomorrow. Having that extra context will help see which models idea has a better chance of being more accurate. - George

People in Minnesota are sharing the “exploding tree warning” for tomorrow’s temperature drop, and let me explain.

The trees aren’t going to go around exploding like dynamite or something.

It’s just it gets so cold that the sap inside the trees can freeze and expand and that expansion can crack the tree open. It really only happens with a big temp drop, like when glass breaks if you put a cold glass pan in a hot oven. I’ve heard it before and it does sound like a gunshot, but the tree just cracks and breaks. There’s not bark flying anywhere or anything.

So yeah, you might hear a tree crack open tomorrow. Stay warm.
