On 29 January in Leopoldville, a press conference was held by three officers to discuss Operation Jadex I, which was meant to rescue people who were in danger.

From the right is the officer in charge Max Dorsinville of Haiti, in the middle is the United Nations Force Commander Major General Aguiyi Ironsi of Nigeria, and on the left is the Chief of Staff of ONUC, Brigadier Jacques Alfred Dextraze of Canada.

Major General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi Ironsi was appointed UN Force Commander in the Congo on 23 December 1964 and he commanded the force from January to June 1964 during its final phase before withdrawal.

Some sources list it as 1963 to 1964, but the official appointment date recorded is December 1964.

He was the first African officer to command the entire UN force there.

He later became Nigerias first Military Head of State after the failed first military coup of 15 January 1966.
