@SparSarkasmus@DPI1135192 Naja.
Someone is building a web browser from scratch.
❌ Not forking Chromium.
❌ Not using WebKit.
❌ Not borrowing from Gecko.
From scratch.
Here's why that's almost insane to attempt.
Every browser you use today - Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, Arc, Samsung Internet, runs on Chromium. Safari runs on WebKit, which is where Chromium came from. Firefox is the only independent engine left, and its market share has been declining for a decade.
The browser engine is the most complex piece of software most people have never thought about. It parses HTML, runs JavaScript, implements CSS, handles cryptography, decodes images, plays video, manages memory - all at once, for every tab, while maintaining the security boundary between your machine and the internet.
Building one from zero has not been done successfully in over a decade.
Ladybird is doing it anyway.
1,200+ contributors. Every layer written from scratch:
> LibWeb: rendering engine
> LibJS: JavaScript engine
> LibWasm: WebAssembly
> LibCrypto/LibTLS: cryptography
> LibGfx: graphics
> LibMedia: audio and video
Each tab runs in its own sandboxed process. Network connections and image decoding run in separate processes entirely, so a malicious webpage can't reach the rest of your system.
Pre-alpha. No releases yet. 61K+ stars watching anyway.
When one engine controls the web, one company decides what the web can do.
That's the problem Ladybird exists to fix.
@MaximoMustero@edelnougat@SandyofCthulhu You are right. I wasn't precise. They would flood, if we do nothing.
Do you have a source for 100%. Everything I read is around 70% and a theoretical 90%.
@MaximoMustero@edelnougat@SandyofCthulhu No shit Sherlock. But this will take another 20 years. And until this is done, it will be the biggest driver for foreign energy dependency.
@MaximoMustero@edelnougat@SandyofCthulhu Again. Coal with CCS is one of the most expensive ways to produce electricity and it's not CO2 free. That's why nobody is investing in it. About the flooding. It's not that they are actively flooded. Preventing the flooding is expensive. Why would we do that?
@flortrupp@markmueller1979@ChrissiD79 Nein.
@MaximoMustero@edelnougat@SandyofCthulhu If you ignore the underlying problem: anthropogenic climate change, we have lots of options. If you don't ignore it and promote CO2 emmiting technology , you need to factor in the cost for resilience against the coming climate change.
@MaximoMustero@edelnougat@SandyofCthulhu Theoretically we can reactivate 6 with 8GW. Around 10% of the current consumption. But nobody wants to invest. As far as I know, there is only one coal power plant with CCS in the world. CCS with coal doubles the cost. Again nobody wants to invest.
@edelnougat@SandyofCthulhu Germany's nuclear climate plan has a big timing problem: new reactors won't be ready before ~2037, but most emissions need to come down by 2035. you still have to build renewables as a bridge and then also build 35+ reactors on top. The math works but the timeline doesn't really.
@flortrupp@markmueller1979@ChrissiD79 Warum so pampig. War seine Wahrnehmung. Ich versteh das Problem nicht. Für mich ist Teewurst in vegan besser als das Original.
