According to Sean, the reason the Nothing Records version of LP5 is a simple black-text-on-white-background instead of the "standard grey-backed jewel case design" is because Nothing Records did not want to spend extra money on getting a special case made.
According to a translated interview from 1998 by WATMM user jaderpansen, Rob describes the album as "a collection of our favourite tracks from the last twelve or thirteen months" rather than them consciously attempting to create a cohesive work.
