Pakistan Cuts Off Azad Kashmir From the Outside World (the portion of Kashmir administered by Pakistan)

Pakistan has imposed a complete internet and mobile blackout across Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Residents have been cut off from all communication with the outside world since June 5.

This move comes ahead of a planned region-wide strike on June 9 by local groups demanding lower electricity bills, better hospitals, jobs, and an end to the privileges enjoyed by the ruling elite.

Instead of addressing these long-standing grievances, the Pakistani government has banned the main protest movement under anti-terrorism laws and deployed additional security forces. Clashes have already turned deadly in areas like Rawalakot, with reports of civilians being shot.

When a government’s immediate response to peaceful demands is to silence an entire population and cut them off from the world, it raises serious questions about how it views its own citizens especially in a region it has long presented as “free.”

Silencing people rarely solves problems. It usually just deepens resentment.
