After 9 years in the US, I finally went back home to Nigeria.
It wasn’t just a trip for me.
It was perspective.
I saw the contrast again — between what I came from and what I now have access to.
And it made me realize something I’d forgotten:
Man, what an advantage.
The immigrant advantage — that mix of perspective, urgency, and resilience that comes from starting with less and making the most of every opportunity.
But here’s the paradox:
That same advantage is so easy to lose.
The more comfortable life gets, the quieter your hunger becomes.
You stop building, stop learning, stop pushing the limits.
And that’s how people — in life and in cybersecurity — lose their edge.
Stability is fine. In fact, it’s something to be grateful for.
But don’t let stability turn into complacency.
Because the moment you stop sharpening your edge, it starts to fade.
This trip back home reminded me where mine came from — and why I need to protect it.

Excited to share that I’ve been promoted to Security Engineer II at Amazon!
This one feels special for a few reasons:
- It lines up with my 5-year anniversary in cybersecurity, a journey that’s stretched me in ways I couldn’t have imagined as that 18-year-old college freshman starting out.
- When I joined Amazon in Dec 2023, it was actually a lateral move from Security Engineer II at Datadog to Security Engineer I at Amazon. On paper it looked like a step back, but I knew Amazon’s SE1 bar was incredibly high and would push me. Looking back, that choice was 100 % worth it.
- Over the past year, I’ve grown not just technically but also in ownership, leadership, and impact—areas I never imagined I’d be pushed to develop this early in my career.
- At Amazon we’re encouraged to work hard, have fun, and make history. Living that motto every day through building customer-obsessed solutions or driving security outcomes has been a defining part of this journey.
Thanks to everyone who’s had an impact on this path especially my amazing leaders and teammates.
I’m proud of how far I’ve come, but I know this is just the beginning. Foot’s still on the gas—lots of work ahead and even more to learn 🙃
