This is Edwin Gathigi, 19, from Matuto Village, Mukurwe-ini, Nyeri County.

Edwin was sentenced to life imprisonment after his grandmother falsely testified against him, committing perjury by alleging that he had defiled his 7 yo cousin. The accusation was later proven to be entirely fabricated after a successful appeal.

His auntie, the mother's sister, decided to punish her sister by jailing her son because she caught her trying to seduce Edwin's father.

After years of injustice, Edwin has finally been released today from King’ong’o Maximum Prison, following sustained public attention and advocacy by journalist Simon Kibe.

We wish Edwin all the best as he begins his life anew.

Can those who testified against him be sued?
