I have been receiving several msgs about BML’s TT support, but been too occupied to write about it.
Here’s the problem & it’s a serious one,
BML says it provides USD support for companies making TTs, up to 50% of the USD required, at the bank rate.
Yes, some companies get it without an issue. BUT several companies are also told they cannot receive this support because the “daily limit” has been reached.
Having a daily limit: Understandable ✅
Daily Limit: BML can keep this confidential ✅
Who gets priority before the limit is reached?: BML shouldn’t hide this ❌
What’s the SOP for the TT support queue?: BML shouldn’t hide this ❌
As far as I can see, there is no publicly available queue, transparent criteria or detailed SOP showing exactly how companies are listed or queued for TT support.
And that creates a very serious governance problem.
If access to scarce, subsidised USD ultimately depends on discretionary decisions inside the bank and affiliated politicians, then whoever controls those decisions effectively has the power to decide:
Company A gets USD at the bank rate ✅
Company B gets: “Daily limit reached” ❌
Without transparent rules, queues and auditable criteria, that discretion creates enormous room for favouritism, political influence, conflicts of interest and corruption.
The obvious consequences of this:
1. Pay-to-prioritise
If an official has discretion over which company receives TT support, they can give it to whoever they want. They can also demand a bribe, favour or political connection in return for moving a company into the approved queue.
And let’s be practical: many companies would be willing to pay if it guarantees them 50% USD support at the bank rate.
And there is an even bigger problem,
2. Fake TTs
Imagine this scenario. If I can guarantee that I will get 50% TT support from BML, I could borrow 1,000,000 USD from a Chinese friend, or maybe a Malaysian friend ( 😜 ) or anyone else, and send a fake TT of 1 million USD to the desired company.
I contribute 500,000 USD while BML supplies another 500,000 USD at the official/bank rate.
The overseas party gets the 1 million USD back, and I now have access to 500,000 USD obtained at the bank rate.
If I sell that 500,000 USD on the black market at MVR 20, the exchange-rate difference alone gives me around 2.3 million in profit. Repeat it once a week and that’s around 9 million profit a month.
And to do this, I only need two things:
Someone willing to lend me the initial USD for a few days + someone who can put me on BML’s TT support list.
If you think there is absolutely no one abusing a system like this and making money from the lack of transparency in the TT support process, you must be naive.
So I challenge BML to publish:
1. Every company that received TT USD support, including the date of application, amount requested, amount supported and date the support was provided.
2. Details of applications that were rejected or deferred because the “daily limit” had been reached.
3. The SOP and objective criteria determining the TT queue and priority.
4. Which officials/committees have the authority to approve, reject or prioritise applications.
5. What role, if any, BML Board members have in these decisions.
If the system is fair and has never been abused, BML shouldn’t have any problem publishing the rules. In fact, doing so would strengthen public confidence in the system.
When hundreds of millions of dollars of scarce foreign currency are being allocated, “daily limit reached” cannot be the beginning and end of the explanation. The public should know who gets the USD, who doesn’t, who decides, and according to what rules.
Because these are the same USDs being taken from the resort industry IN OUR NAME.
@Faal_26@Airbnb@bankofmaldives Now everything is included under daily budget. Even subscriptions, hotel and other travel payments. They change their policies twice a day.
Hello @hdcmaldives
Aren’t Hiyaa and other social housing projects meant to provide homes for people who do not have a place to live? Now that the government has reduced the rent to below MVR 4,000, is it acceptable for owners to rent these apartments out for around MVR 20,000?
The Chairperson election is over. All MDP members have accepted the result.
The mockery, personal attacks and bullying by CP Nasheed’s cronies against President Ibu’s supporters and Meekail’s supporters and MDP PG members must stop NOW. I have never seen this level of coordinated attacks.
CP Nasheed, if you cannot control the loose cannons around you, you will face a level of resistance you have never encountered before.
If we cannot respect our own MPs, we will never persuade PNC MPs to defect. This arrogance will only strengthen Muizzu and hand him a second term in 2028.
Leadership must put an end to this division now.
