Born and raised in the heart of Geza Kenisha, Asmara, Kaleab Mehari was not just a name, he was a local football legend.

His feet brought joy to the dusty pitches of his neighborhood, but a higher calling soon beckoned him to the frontlines of freedom.

This breathtaking photograph carries the weight of history. Captured by photographer Fitsum Gebrai on March 24, 1984, at 11:00 AM on the shores of Marsa Teklay, it was taken just two days after the total annihilation of the enemy's Wuqaw Command.

Kaleab served as a Radio Operator in the 3rd Battalion of the legendary 23rd Brigade.

His comrades remember him not for the horrors of war, but for his radiant soul.

He was a man deeply connected to everyone around him, possessing a face that refused to frown.

Even in the trenches, his heart remained always joyful, always full of hope. But freedom demands the ultimate price.

Just ten months before Eritrea finally breathed the air of independence, during the August 1990 Dekemhare campaign, the historic first attempt to liberate his beloved hometown of Asmara, Kaleab was struck by an enemy bullet.

Eternal Glory to our Heroed Martyrs.
