Capitalism At Risk Because Of AI

As AI will displace jobs across entire industries, a common response is that government will need to step in. Universal basic income, universal healthcare, government funded housing - these will not be radical ideas. Elon Musk and other tech leaders have already quoted the need for UBI as AI capabilities expand. These will be positioned as the only compassionate response to mass unemployment. Millions of people are going to lose their livelihoods. Of course we should help them, right? Of course government should ensure people don't starve while we figure this out.

But here's what that will actually mean. UBI will require government to control the flow of income to citizens. Universal healthcare will require government to control access to medical care. Government funded housing will put the state in control of where and how people live. These won't be just safety net programs - they'll be fundamental shifts in where power resides. Once government gains control of your income, your healthcare, and your housing, it will control you. And unlike previous government expansions that happened gradually in individual countries, AI will force this conversation globally and simultaneously.

This is the path to socialism, and it will be paved with good intentions. AI is the path to socialism. If our morality forces us to hand governments around the world unprecedented control over citizens' lives because AI made work scarce, we need to understand what we're trading. And once that power is given, it doesn't get returned.

We've seen this pattern throughout history - crisis leads to government expansion, expansion becomes permanent, and suddenly you're living under a very different system than you started with. If it comes to the US, we can easily enter globalism and an abrupt end to MAGA. Once economic sovereignty shifts to international governance managing AI displacement, America First becomes America Dependent.

When AI displaces massive numbers of jobs, private employment will become meaningless if the supply of talent far exceeds demand. Sure, some private jobs will still exist, but when there are a hundred qualified people competing for every position, you'll have no leverage. You'll take what's offered or you'll rely on UBI. Either way, you won't be in a position to push back. That's the trap - government income will become your real income because private work won't be able to provide stability or bargaining power anymore.

The Founders understood this deeply. They saw how decentralized power and individual freedom created flourishing cities. And they saw how centralized monarchies crushed it. They built an entire system of government designed to prevent power from concentrating in one place, precisely because they knew what happened when it did.

So when AI makes work scarce and the global response is "let government manage everyone's income and healthcare," we won't be creating conditions for human flourishing. We'll be creating the exact centralized power structure the Founders fought against. A government that provides your income can withhold it for compliance. A government that controls your healthcare can deny it for the same reason. That's not conspiracy theory - that's basic leverage.

And here's what keeps me up: the Renaissance was localized. Italian city states experimented with different systems. Other regions could watch, learn, adopt what worked, reject what didn't. There were alternatives. There was competition between models. AI's impact will be global and simultaneous. Every country will face the same job displacement crisis at the same time. The pressure to adopt government-controlled UBI and healthcare will be universal. There will be no control group. No alternative model to point to. No second chance if we get this wrong.
