In Robinson Crusoe (1719), Daniel Defoe described the “upper station of low life” — the middle class—as the one best suited to happiness: cushioned on the one hand from the sufferings of the poor, and on the other from the pride, luxury, and envy of the rich.

The great disasters of life appear most among the top and bottom, where for very different reasons, feelings of uneasiness and insecurity lead more often to personal calamity.

How much has changed in 304 years? Is the middle class still best placed to enjoy life without stress and strain?
