This latest threat to Kashmiri Pandits must not be taken lightly.The fact that the threat letter contains names, addresses, vehicle numbers and mobile numbers suggests that someone with access to sensitive information may be involved. The source must be identified and booked under law. If the threat is emanating from outside India, the perpetrators must understand the consequences. As Israel demonstrated after 7 October 2023, those who threaten its citizens are not allowed to feel safe anywhere in the world.

At the same time, Kashmiri Pandits must be given proper threat-awareness, do’s and don’ts, and basic tactical training. Wherever legally feasible, those facing credible threats should be considered for licensed small arms and trained in their safe and effective use. The ability to defend themselves can itself serve as a deterrent.

Wherever possible, vulnerable employees should also be posted to secure government premises such as Deputy Commissioners’ offices, the Secretariat and protected Directorates, rather than leaving them exposed as soft targets.

The J&K administration needs a high-level security action plan, led by the Chief Secretary, DGP, ADG CID and other security chiefs, specifically to protect Kashmiri Pandits.

This threat must be taken seriously. Prevention is better than mourning another tragedy.

Patiala, Punjab - A couple was attacked by a pitbull dog in Patiala while they were visiting a property with a real estate dealer. The husband and wife had gone to inspect a house for purchase. When they rang the doorbell, a pitbull inside the premises suddenly lunged at them. Local residents tried to intervene and rescue the couple, but by then the dog had already inflicted serious injuries. Both the husband and wife sustained multiple bite wounds on various parts of their bodies. They have been admitted to a private hospital in Patiala for treatment.

Today, I visited the Power Department, and what I saw will stay with me for a long time. The office was filled with poor men and women whose electricity had been disconnected through smart meters. They weren’t asking for charity. They were begging for a little time.
One father with tears in his eyes pleaded before the engineer.
Sir I just got my daughter married. I couldn’t arrange 5,200 because of the wedding expenses. Please give me just two days. I promise I will pay every rupee.

The answer was simple. Sorry we can’t do anything. It is automatic. First pay. Only then will your connection be restored. My heart sank. Tell me How much money do government departments owe the Power Department? Have their electricity connections been disconnected? How much do politically connected and influential people owe? Have their connections been snapped?
Or is the law meant only for the poor?

A poor family misses one payment because of illness, a daughter’s marriage, or unemployment and their home is plunged into darkness. Meanwhile those with power and influence rarely face the same consequences. This isn’t just about electricity. It’s about dignity. It’s about justice. It’s about humanity. If rules are to be enforced they must be enforced equally. Justice cannot have two standards one for the powerful and another for the powerless. For countless struggling families, smart meters have become a symbol of fear rather than progress.
