the speed with which Reservation Hatao Andolan has grown is very telling of something we refuse to admit about urban india. we keep imagining casteism as something that belongs to villages, to the uneducated, or to openly conservative families. meanwhile, the people who quietly reproduce caste are often much closer to us. they are our friends. our families. our colleagues. our classmates. they rarely announce their casteism openly. instead, it appears in subtle remarks about "merit", complaints about reservation, jokes made over dinner, conversations about "undeserving quotas", or the casual assumption that some people are simply meant to serve while others are meant to be served. Dr. B. R. Ambedkar warned us that "turn in any direction you like, caste is the monster that crosses your path."

i recently overheard a petite bourgeois woman complaining that her maid had become "too slow." what struck me wasn't the complaint itself. it was that nobody asked the obvious question: how exhausted must someone be after travelling across the city, cleaning multiple homes every single day, and still earning just enough to survive? her exhaustion was invisible. only the inconvenience she caused mattered. perhaps that is how capitalism and caste work together. one teaches us to value people according to their productivity. the other teaches us whose labour should remain invisible. our empathy is usually reserved for people we imagine to be our equals. we sympathise with an overworked corporate employee because we can imagine ourselves in their place. we rarely extend the same empathy to the domestic worker, the sanitation worker or the delivery rider because the social order has taught us that they exist to make our lives easier.

this is why i have always found it strange when people tell me they are "good employers." they point to the festival bonuses they give their domestic workers. the saree they bought them for Diwali. the gifts they give on birthdays. the extra money they leave for waiters. charity becomes a substitute for justice. generosity becomes a substitute for equality. we perform kindness without ever questioning why some people spend their entire lives serving others in the first place. exploitation with occasional generosity is still exploitation.

the sociologist Pierre Bourdieu argued that domination reproduces itself through habit—through everyday practices that become so ordinary they begin to feel natural. who cooks. who cleans. who serves tea. who clears the table. who apologises. who is expected to smile. in india, these habits cannot be understood without caste. Ambedkar reminded us that caste is not merely a division of labour but a division of labourers. certain communities inherit the expectation of serving. others inherit the privilege of never having to think about who serves them.

that is why generations of us—especially upper-caste, middle-class men—have reached adulthood without knowing how to cook a basic meal, clean a toilet or wash our own clothes. people laugh about this as if it were charming. it isn't. it reveals an entire social order in which someone else was always expected to perform reproductive labour so that you never had to learn it yourself. privilege is often inherited as incompetence. we celebrate men who "help" around the house because, deep down, we still believe it was never their responsibility to begin with.

look at the things that make us angry. a Swiggy order arriving five minutes late. the garbage not being collected on time. the house not being cleaned properly. the lift not being mopped. but we rarely ask why delivery workers are expected to meet impossible targets, why domestic workers spend hours commuting across cities for poverty wages, or why sanitation workers continue to die cleaning sewers despite manual scavenging being outlawed. we know exactly when our food is late, but almost nothing about the people whose labour allows us to eat, live and work comfortably. inconvenience provokes outrage. exploitation barely registers.

this is why i don't think Reservation Hatao Andolan created anything new. movements rarely manufacture prejudice overnight. they organise sentiments that already exist. what the movement has exposed is how deeply caste survives beneath the language of urban meritocracy. today it rarely announces itself through ideas of purity and pollution. it speaks in the language of "merit", "efficiency", "productivity" and "equal opportunity". the vocabulary has changed. the hierarchy has not.

perhaps that is the greatest success of caste in modern India. it didn't disappear but became respectable. it learnt English and entered our universities, corporate offices, gated societies and dinner tables. it adapted itself to capitalism, where exploitation can be defended as efficiency and inherited privilege can be celebrated as merit. and because it now sounds polite, educated, and rational, we mistake it for common sense instead of recognising it for what it still is: caste.
