43 years ago, Black July exposed the brutality within a nation professing Sinhala Buddhist values... and the vacuum of moral leadership that allowed a pogrom to unfold.
Today, the laugh emojis beneath reports of the Chemmani mass grave expose the same moral void.
So, does empathy end at ethnicity? Is civility just a thin and meaningless veneer?
I love my country. But sometimes, I feel nothing but shame.

NO to Black July ever again 🇱🇰🏴
On This Day in 1983, one of the darkest and most tragic chapters in Sri Lanka’s history unfolded.
We remember the pain.
We acknowledge the mistake.
We stand united, Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim, Burgher, Malay.
One Country. One Nation 🕊️
Never Again 🙏
Remembering 🙏

@kalinga@BaristaSL Another thing I feel ridiculous about @BaristaSL is the packaging charge. Isn’t basic packaging part of the product? 🤷🏻♀️ Packaging is essential to carry the food safely without any spills. We ain’t buying food plus privilege of a box. Personally, I find it off putting.
Operations at the Chmmani mass grave in Jaffna yesterday unearthed several more skeletal remains with personal effects, such as clothing, small glass bangles, and a blue cloth bag resembling a school bag, suggesting that some of the unearthed skeletal remains could be those of children.
