On this day, exactly 40 years ago, anti-apartheid lawyer Griffiths Mxenge stopped to help men whose car had stalled - only to be murdered by them, on the orders of apartheid police.
His wife Victoria would be assassinated four years later.
May they rest in power.
Today marks the 40th anniversary of Griffiths Mxenge's assassination. His killers Dirk Coetzee, Almond Nofomela, Joe Mamasela, Brian Ngqulunga and David Tshikalanga were granted amnesty.

Before studying law and qualifying as an attorney Victoria Mxenge trained and qualified as a nurse at Victoria Hospital in Alice. She went on to complete a course in midwifery at King Edward hospital and served as a community nurse eMlazi.

This freedom, at least politically, WASN'T freely handed to us, as an act of charity, but was sacrificed for: Griffiths Mxenge and later his wife Victoria Mxenge paid supreme prices (sacrifice with their life), among many others, to get us where we're right now!
