Henrietta Lacks a Black woman died in 1951 at the age of 31 of cervical cancer.

Her cells turned out to be immortal. The cells could survive in labs making it possible for researchers to reproduce studies.

The cells were named the HeLa cell line. They were shared without consent. In the 1950s doctors could harvest cells without a patient's permission.

However, laboratories and researchers continued to use Ms. Lacks’ cells without the consent of the family for decades, despite their attempts to have the cell sharing stopped. The family was never compensated for the contributions the HeLa cells made to research.

Today, work done with HeLa cells underpins much of modern medicine; they have been involved in key cancer discoveries and COVID research.

On behalf of the Lacks family, Attorney Crump filed a series of lawsuits against laboratories for using the cells without consent. The family of Henrietta Lacks settled its lawsuit against the huge biotechnology company Thermo Fisher Scientific over being “unjustly enriched.”
