Trapped Between Systems: My Real Experience With @Hertz, @Uber, and a Near Scam
By Nourish
I’m writing this to document a real experience — not as an attack, but as a record.
For context, I have a full-time job. Driving on Uber was only a part-time side hustle. Even so, doing everything correctly should not lead to billing confusion, contract renewals after a return, or exposure to scams.
This is what happened.
⸻
Renting the Vehicle for a Side Hustle
I rented a vehicle through Hertz so I could do Uber on the side. In hindsight, renting may not have been the best decision — but that doesn’t change what followed.
Customers deserve accurate billing and clear records regardless of how often they use a service.
⸻
Returning the Vehicle — In Person, on the 22nd
On Wednesday, the 22nd, I returned the vehicle in person.
I handed the key directly to a Hertz representative. He went outside, inspected the car, came back, gave me a thumbs up, and told me I was good. Based on that confirmation, I ordered an Uber and left the location without the vehicle, believing the rental was properly closed.
That interaction matters, because it’s what everything else should be based on.
⸻
Being Charged After the Vehicle Was Returned
Despite returning the vehicle on the 22nd, I was charged for a full additional week — including Thursday, Friday, and the following days.
What made this even more confusing is that the rental contract was renewed, even though:
The vehicle had already been returned
The keys had been handed in
The return had been verbally confirmed
I no longer had possession of the car
To my understanding, a contract should not renew when the vehicle is no longer in the customer’s possession.
⸻
Limited Uber Access and Minimal Use
During that same week, I completed only one Uber trip.
I was unable to fully access or use the Uber app as expected, which meant I wasn’t actively driving or generating income. Despite this minimal use — and despite returning the car — the rental continued billing as if the vehicle was still in use.
Adding to the confusion, I still have access to the Uber driver app, even though I no longer have a vehicle.
That disconnect raises serious questions about how these systems communicate — or don’t.
⸻
The Near Scam That Could Have Made Things Worse
While trying to resolve the situation, I reached out on social media — and that’s when something concerning happened.
I was contacted by a Twitter/X account using the name “Hertz Customer Care.” The account appeared legitimate at first glance, but it was not verified, and the interaction raised red flags.
I stopped before engaging further, but it became clear that this could have been a scam attempt, potentially targeting customers already dealing with billing disputes.
When official support is difficult to reach, people become vulnerable.
⸻
No Clear Human Resolution
Throughout this experience, the biggest issue has been the lack of clear, human accountability.
I encountered:
Automated systems
Long wait times
Unclear explanations
No single person able to review the full timeline
I returned the car, followed instructions, and still had to chase answers.
⸻
Why I’m Sharing This
This isn’t about anger or revenge.
It’s about documenting:
A vehicle returned in person
Charges applied after the return
A contract renewed without possession of the car
Minimal platform use during the billing period
Exposure to impersonation and scams
These are not edge cases. They are systemic gaps.
⸻
What I’m Asking For
I’m simply asking for:
Accurate billing tied to actual possession
Contracts that end when vehicles are returned
Clear communication when issues arise
Human review of disputes
Better safeguards against fake customer support accounts
⸻
Final Thoughts
I did what I was supposed to do.
This article is a factual record of my experience. Hope sharing will helps someone ask better questions and better documentation.
After going thru all the comments and all the bad experiences people have with hertz. I vote to start a campaign to put @hertz in the spot light for the consumer accountability and their predatory rental practices. Who’s with me?
By the way we are now 8 days since i returned my rental back to hertz and they still haven’t closed my contract and will attempt to charge me again for another week. Good job @hertz🤡
It wasnt, their still sending me email about renew my contract this friday again, i just keep a record of everything. Im going to have to take it to the next level. I was almost scam by a fake hertz twitter account. This is too much stress . Ive email them and they haven’t respond back , so im just recording everything.
Returned Uber rental w/ @Hertz Apr 22, 2026 Revere MA. Handed keys to staff, left w/out car. Contract never closed, still charged after return. Also still active in @Uber rental system w/no vehicle. Filed AG + BBB complaints. Need correction ASAP.
@hertz Man i really thought this was a one off thing, but its obviously not. I return my rental last week Wednesday and they still haven’t close my contract either. They renew it instead and charge me a full week. Even have a scammer called me from some fake hertz customer care trying to trick me into sending them money. And all im getting is the run around.
@hertz You know i never wanted to be the guy who as to come online to called out a company, but here i am. Again its been 7 days now that i drop of a rental at hertz and i was charge for a full week and my contract renewed.
Today some guy with a foreign accent called me and tell me to go on some shady website from @hertz to put in my personal info to send me my back plus $200. He gave me some crazy number next to a kenya flag which look like im sending him money instead.
@Hertz@hertz wat are you going to tell me again? To email [email protected]. Well ive already did that and i get no response. I’ve also email [email protected]. Guess wat? No response. So everyday you keep my contract open for a rental that was dropped off 4/22. I’ll be here.
