During explosive athletic activities the intrinsic foot muscles function eccentrically and concentrically Isometric exercises are unlikely to improve athletic performance. Research shows sprinting times are improved by eccentric and rapid concentric strengthening
Interesting view point from Romain Tourillon . Unfortunately , IMO, he seems to have forgotten that toe deformities are very common in sports people and are often caused by lack of attention to intrinsic foot muscle strength, not over emphasis.

Of course the thing about the plantar fascia stretch is it's as much a stretch of the intrinsic foot muscles as anything else and that is where we find groupings of sensory muscle spindles in similar numbers to the muscles of the fingers.
The plantar fascia stretch can improve balance in chronic stroke victims ,possibly by improving proprioception .

@alisongrimaldi Foot muscles seem to be a vital source of proprioceptive information . The plantar fascia stretch improves balance and gait even in chronic stroke victims . The intrinsic foot muscles may be as important to proprioception as the plantar cutaneous receptors
Weak ๐ฆต musculature adversely affects balance so more reliance on systems like vestibular apparatus. But low intrinsic foot muscles compromise this system also.

The inner ear has a direct, controlling link to the intrinsic foot muscles and this is an important part of balance.

The medial longitudinal arch is supported by the plantar fascia ,ligaments , and muscles . Muscles are themselves made up of connective tissue , contractile components, and short tendons. The muscles make up a far larger part of the foot than the ligaments and PF combined .

How do you turn body shape to your advantage during balance .
By using the IFM to adjust the position of the tibiotalar joint. You can balance by moving the COM over the foot or moving the tibiotalar joint under the COM. Think upside broom balanced on palm of hand.
A number of papers have shown a strong link between the muscles of the foot and the vestibular apparatus in ear and brain. Motor signals from this apparatus directly control foot muscle function. Now researchers have showed sensory nerve signals going from ๐ฆถmuscles to brain .
