In the year 2048, we’ll have half a stack of stacks of years. Let me explain. In the year 64, we had a stack of years and in year 128, we had 2 stacks of years so in 2048, we’ll have 32 stacks of 64 years.
@Incornsyucopia A clear majority would create a duty to negotiate, not an automatic right to leave on any terms. Indigenous rights still have to be addressed. Being a minority doesn’t make those rights disappear.
Honestly, the Alberta referendum is so dumb because they can't even separate. You are on treaty land. That is not your land to separate from. Like damn, people are dumb. #AlbertaReferendum
@drunkbeater That’s really my point. They’d have to work out an agreement with Indigenous nations. I wouldn’t assume money alone would settle it, since land and treaty rights mean more than their dollar value.
@Krush_Canada I agree that countries with treaties can separate. My point is that Indigenous rights and treaty obligations still have to be addressed. Calling it a company sale doesn’t settle who takes on those obligations or on what terms. We can disagree without the insults.
@drunkbeater There’s definitely a lot of money involved, but that doesn’t make treaty rights disappear. I’m not saying treaties make separation impossible. I’m saying wanting to leave doesn’t give Alberta the right to ignore them.
@drunkbeater Treaties have certainly been broken and ignored, but that doesn’t mean they have no legal force. That history is a reason to honour those commitments, not an excuse to dismiss them.
@TiredCanadian07 U.S. recognition would matter politically, but it wouldn’t override Canadian law or erase Indigenous rights. A majority vote alone doesn’t settle separation or borders. Saying Canada and Indigenous nations could do absolutely nothing is a pretty big leap.
@Seankolo11 So Quebec has treaties too. They protect Indigenous rights to land and resources, so changing who governs that land affects those rights. The Bloc supports independence, but neither province can simply vote those obligations away. They just simply don't have any numbered treaties
