The wealth tax is dumb but wiping out wealth on death has a strong meritocratic argument on it which is that you only get to eat what you kill.

In any case kids of wealthy parents still have a major leg up over normal people in access to education, financial safety and network.

Perfect excuse for @GiorgiaMeloni and @kmitsotakis to trigger a migration-related crisis with Libya and enact a total sea blockade. If Turkey escalates, Israel could enter and also Turkey can be blockaded as well as sanctioned.

Peace settlement should be migration control, unification, lifting of sanctions and extensive oil and gas investments in Libya.

EU would be protesting loudly to maintain ties with Turkey but ultimately has no jurisdiction on defence but maintain the mutual defence clause of the EU is absolute and has no opt-outs.

Libya without oil and gas exports and without food imports would destabilize very quickly and become dependent on Egypt and Algeria for supplies; two powers not aligned with Turkey.

If the Russians use their planes against the blockade then that would also sink the “Russia is not our enemy” narrative in Italy.

Maybe after the winter would be a good time.

@eurochallenges There is a problem with construction costs though both material and labour has increased a lot in price.

I do think it is better solved by prefab than on-site robotics.

There’s precedent for that though, Nazi collaborators were stripped of their citizenship after WW2 and those were natives.

The ECHR also doesn’t deem stripping citizenship as a violation of rights and within state’s rights.

It gets more complicated when you want to deport them because there is lots of case law preventing this but 48 countries leaned on the court last year which resulted in the court promising to take into account states’ rights to protect its borders and guarantee security.

The EU still has to find 3th party countries to deport them too but the EU return regulation is in force since 3 days.

That one enables countries to deport regardless to a safe 3th country.

I reckon by mid next year most countries will have deportation pipelines up and running and the harsh crackdowns those sociological geniuses desire will be both legal and practical.

Every soldier bleeds the same in war but a limited population group gets to choose between war and peace? What’s to prevent a Gallipolli scenario where Britain deployed Australians and New Zealanders to avoid electoral consequences at home?

European NATO forces in Afghanistan were already very unreliable with some countries refusing dangerous missions and some withdrawing.

What if a large state (e.g. Italy) votes against and then refuses to enter the war and finance it.

What if the future leader of one of the permanent states is against all war or completely ignorent on military affairs?

Maybe with today’s political leadership but in the future with other leadership.

I don’t think there’s a real substitute for elected leadership based on merit by all states and associated insurrection acts to guarantee compliance. That’s a structure that could evolve to democratic elections with bound electors like it did in the US after 40 years.

That’s not old people generally and it’s also not welfare recipients and state employees.

Les miserables had a tremendous impact on the world through its plea for social justice and a compassionate society. It shaped French society for more than 150 years but for compassionate justice to work there was one major requirement.

The criminal wanted to change.

It’s hard to imagine they would pose for group pictures celebrating their crimes.

French society provides more than enough opportunities for those who want to work for it.

Showing compassion with the lazy, hostile, extractive or outright stupid people makes no sense either and the vigilant application of the full force of the law is in fact, exactly what they deserve.

Everybody in life has a calling, for some that’s to be the bad example that deters others from copying you.

For those kids it’s probably too late but compassion and welfare should be withdrawn so they may learn to value what the poor of the 19th century built up on blood, sweat and tears.

ik ben toch een pak meer optimistisch over Europa dan 2 jaar geleden want op Europees niveau schuift er veel.

De innovationgap met de VS is een gevolg van fragmentatie van de kapitaalmarkten in 27 kleine kapitaalmarkten en de afwezigheid van een gekapitaliseerd pensioenstelsel zoals in de VS.

De VS heeft 142% van zijn GDP in pensioenfondsen die elk jaar een goede return zoeken. In de EU is dat 32% en tot voor kort mochten die nog niet eens in aandelen beleggen.

In de VS is kapitaal ophalen om aan wat overregulering te voldoen geen probleem, in Europa is alles een drama want kapitaal is zeer schaars.

De NVA hun kinderbijslag in een vlaams fonds steken; alsook de einsteinrekening kadert in de Europese initiatieven. Het gevecht in Belgie gaat zijn om politiekers weg te houden van die (te creeren) pot geld en meer de Duitse en Amerikaanse route te gaan van het volledig onder individuele controle te brengen. (Cfr. Altersvorsorgedepot en nu recent de fruhstart pension for kids)

Het is ook een structureel antwoord op het onvermijdelijke failliet van de staatspensioenen.

For what it’s worth, I think merging 3 lethargic companies into one is not going to help and the EU would be better off having them compete aggressively for R&D procurements jointly procured through the EU.

Anti-trust had to be reformed in order to allow one to win, not to slap them together into one superlethargic company.

The actions of the 🇺🇸 US administration have consequences.

Recent reports from 4 sources confirm that both Elon and Trump supported the restrictions of Starshield, which confirms my earlier posts stating that SpaceX is involved and part of it.

The Telegraph on Oct. 16 reported that it was Musk who proposed the speed cap to Trump — and Trump "agreed," one source said.

Going to be an interesting European Council this week.

I have a suspicion that Trump’s pro-Russian spiel is tolerated by the republicans because it has a narrative of forcing Europe to become independent militarily through negative control (scare tactics).

So far this narrative fits the facts better than a Manchurian candidate.

The MFF discussion this week is critical for European sovereignty, yet is getting a lot of pushback cause the fiscal situation deteriorated.

But then again, not everything fits the narrative well such as the Houthi takeover of Bab-el-mandeb and the lifting of sanctions. That one fits much better in the Manchurian candidate narrative.

Trump would have the incentive to maintain both narratives as plausible either to appease Putin and to appease Republicans capable of impeaching him or to make sure negative control over US allies has the desired effect of setting up a British-style balance-of-power strategy.

Potentially both narratives are valid and Trump is juggling blackmail, impeachment and Americanism.

@EULondonMark @POLITICOEurope It’s legislation coming into effect from when the council was dominated by left-wing leaders.

The process that EU law follows is awfully slow, some fast-track procedures should definitely be implemented, at least to amend existing laws.
