Sometimes it is restraint.

Sometimes it is simply trusting God enough not to explain yourself.

Learn when to speak.

Learn when to pray.

And learn when to keep quiet.

There are times when God’s providence is difficult to understand. A servant who seems deeply useful is taken home early, while another believer remains for years wondering why so little seems to come from his life.

Scripture does not explain why God gives one servant twenty years and another seventy. “My times are in Your hand” (Psalm 31:15). When Peter compared his path with John’s, Jesus answered, “What is that to you? You follow Me!” (John 21:22).

That is where we must begin. We are not called to measure our usefulness against another believer’s life. We are called to follow Christ faithfully in the life He has given us.

But we should not use sovereignty as an excuse for spiritual barrenness either. Jesus said, “My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit” (John 15:8). If years are passing with no repentance, no obedience, no love, and no growth, that should concern us.

At the same time, fruit is not always dramatic. We often think of usefulness in terms of ministry, influence, numbers, or visible results. God may be producing something quieter: patience, holiness, forgiveness, endurance, prayer, humility, and a deeper hatred of sin. Galatians 5:22–23 reminds us that these are fruits of the Spirit too.

So there is both warning and comfort. If we have been careless, we should repent. If we feel small and unnoticed, we should not assume we are useless. “He who began a good work in you will perfect it” (Philippians 1:6).

Our purpose is not hidden somewhere waiting to be discovered. “We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works” (Ephesians 2:10).

The length of our life belongs to God. The results belong to God. Our responsibility is to be faithful with the days He has placed in our hands.

If you work hard and do your work excellently, you'll likely be patronised by "great men" and influential people.

But this doesn't mean your work will certainly make you wealthy; neither does it mean you shouldn't provide noble services to commoners and ordinary people.

Also, if your work is the gospel, it doesn't mean excellent sermons and songs will take you to Aso Rock and Buckingham Palace.

Paul stood before kings, but he was often bound in chains and certainly wasn't courting their favour.

Herod was fascinated by John's sermons, but he eventually ordered his execution.

I sincerely hope we learn to use Scripture accurately, instead of quoting it like Satan to sponsor our carnality and selfish schemes.

What to Avoid If You Want to Walk in Purpose

If you want to walk in the purpose God has for you, avoid distractions, comparison, people-pleasing, bitterness, unforgiveness, pride, fear, and constant doubt. Not every opportunity is an assignment, and not every voice deserves your attention.

Stay with Jesus, guard your heart, obey His Word, and remain sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Purpose becomes clearer when Christ remains at the center.
What God has called you to requires focus, faith, discipline, and willingness to let go of anything that pulls you away from Him.
