Check out the new paper by @conorgil and my colleagues at UC Berkeley that defines and evaluates an assessment methodology for conducting systematic security and privacy analyses of the backup and recovery functionality of 2FA apps (e.g., Google Authenticator).
Backup options in many Android #TOTP#2FA apps share personal info w/ 3rd parties, have serious crypto flaws, and/or allow app devs to access TOTP secrets 😱
