Being “coachable” might be the biggest lost quality in youth sports.
Lots of kids seem put off by being coached. As if being shown how to do something better is a knock on them.
Being coached means the coach cares about you.
Maybe more of a message for the parents.
This is why pond hockey needs to exist, street hockey needs to live on, and unstructured play is so damn important. These are dudes PLAYING hockey. Coaching is important, but we also need to allow kids time to PLAY. This goal is learning from PLAY.

Youth hockey culture is like a repellent to a lot of good hockey people, they get in for a year and then peace out from the dysfunction. It’s really a shame.
