The joyful, colorful anthem peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 (blocked from #1 by Van Halen's "Jump") and reached #1 in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, becoming one of the defining pop songs of the 1980s.

Originally written by Robert Hazard from a male perspective, Lauper transformed it into an empowering celebration of female independence. She completely rewrote the lyrics and restructured the chords from Hazard's rock demo to create the synth-pop/reggae-infused track we know today. The song's iconic music video, featuring professional wrestler Captain Lou Albano as her father and a cameo by her real-life mother, won the very first Best Female Video award at the MTV VMAs in 1984.
