"The joke was distasteful and unfortunate...Now I have to sit in front of you...and explain someone else's behavior. It's not my responsibility."
- @TeamUSA captain and Torrent forward Hilary Knight on the call and joke by President Donald Trump.
On today’s verdict. As a female sports journalist, as an SA survivor, as a woman.
Believe survivors. This account is a safe space. My DMs are always open 🤍
Today and every day, believe survivors.
The system is beyond flawed when several men tell several different stories and communicate they need to “get their stories straight” before an investigation and cannot be questioned on their own actions or reliability.
Stan Bowman is a GM again
Joel Quenneville is coaching again
And the Hockey Canada r*pists are walking free and will be playing hockey again
You cannot tell me the system and culture around this sport is anything less than broken beyond repair
I see a lot of anger here, so I just want to add a wrinkle of context.
No, I didn't ask Chantal to do anything, that was more senior members of the media.
But I think fans are being unapologetically disingenuous about how rough a full-time journalist's life is and how they're looking at very difficult times ahead.
As entities like Sportsnet and TSN, as well as local newspapers continue to cut jobs, it becomes even more important for them to monetize the coverage granted to the by the Habs.
They are the ones that have to drive to and from practices in the morning, write a story asap in the late am.
Then get to the Bell Centre for pre-game media, watch the games and then try to squeeze out whatever info they can from the players to provide fans with some insight. They'll usually finish writing a story by midnight and finally head home.
That's 16-hour days of thankless work; and they're back at Brossard usually the next day by 8-9 am.
So for the access they have to be totally and instantly available to the public does put their job in jeopardy, and I get why, in this market specifically, there's a fear of becoming obsolete.
The world of media is changing, and some are doing whatever they can to negotiate their place in that new reality.
So my two cents, this seems like the best possible compromise for fans and media.
It changes nothing for fans and accounts like @HabsOnReddit in the end, but it does give the media time needed to extract value from their access.
Those who are quick to attack Chantal on this simply don't get what it's like on the other side.
When I started, I thought it was a dream job. But, in reality, it's extremely rough and demanding.
Be more considerate and put yourself in someone else's shoes before judging is what I like to say.

Cover up a sexual assault in order to win a championship, sit out 2 and a half years and you’re welcomed back into the league with open arms. There are honest mistakes and there are malicious acts. Being part of the highest level of sports in your field is a privilege and actions like this should preclude you from ever being part that again. NHL leadership was and continuous to be a complete farce.
