While studying human elephant conflict in Amboseli we met a lady in hospital who survived an elephant attack - she was herding her goats & collecting firewood like this lady. Hard to imagine how a daily chore can be so deadly.
Ngoja kidogo or Wait-a-bit thorn (Acacia mellifera) has pairs of back curved thorns that catch on everything. It is nature’s barbed wire! In t/ dry season it explodes into soft pale pink slightly scented blossoms. It’s a sight to behold in the backlight - mesmerizing Amboseli

Today is #WorldWildlifeDay, and we have been overwhelmed by the messages of concern, touching tributes and well wishes for Sudan. It has been a tough couple of days for us here at Ol Pejeta but your encouragement has kept us (and Sudan) going.
The resilience that Sudan is showing in the face of adversity is truly remarkable. Yesterday, he came out of his boma, took a stroll in the larger enclosure and grazed peacefully. Our beloved Mzee has clearly not lost the will to live and is not going down without a fight.
SGR construction has begun in the Nairobi park - it’s a sad sad day for Kenya when the voices of millions of protestors seeking to save our heritage have been ignored. The Great Iron snake has taken our jumbos in Tsavo and now our rhinos are at risk.
