🔹Downtown Victoria business owner assaulted while closing Yates St. store; calls for immediate action by council🔹
A sudden attack by a person described by bicycle store owner Tyson Schley as “clearly intoxicated, homeless, and actively looking for conflict” could have ended much worse for the downtown Victoria businessman on Sunday. The incident is described in detail by Schley, who operates Yates Street’s Giant bicycle store, and is calling for council to act immediately to restore order and safety downtown. A statement is reproduced below:
Today I was violently assaulted while closing my business downtown Victoria.
My name is Tyson Schley, and I am the owner and operator of Giant Victoria, located at 631 Yates Street in downtown Victoria.
I’m writing today with deep frustration and disappointment following a violent assault I suffered outside my own business, in broad daylight, while simply trying to close up for the evening.
On Sunday, June 29th at approximately 6:00 PM, as I was locking up and saying goodbye to my employees, an individual, clearly intoxicated, homeless, and actively looking for conflict approached our storefront. I informed him the store was closed and asked him to move along so I could finish locking up. Without warning, he became aggressive and began kicking the front door, attempting to break in, or just cause senseless damage.
As I tried to protect my store and deter further damage, an altercation ensued. Words were exchanged; he then charged at me and began to try to land punches swinging at anything in an attempt to hurt me. Shortly into the scuffle he then struck me with a half-full 26oz whisky bottle. I shielded my head, but the bottle shattered on impact with my arm, fracturing it. The man fled on foot, but two of my employees followed him on bikes and worked with police to help locate and arrest him despite him continuing to act aggressively, including allegedly resisting arrest and spitting on officers.
